I was the keynote for the 2018 Cyberspace conference, in Brno, Czech Republic. In the keynote, I gave an overview of our research on impression management and impression formation in online dating. Studying online dating is interesting as it is an increasingly popular social phenomenon. Moreover, online dating provides a way for us to test our theories on computer-mediated communication and relationship formation.
In the presentation, I talked about the importance of physical attractiveness and similarity in online dating, and how this is similar or different to real-life dating. I also discussed our research on how people form impression of others on Tinder, and I discussed our research on language use in online dating. Finally, I provided some fun insights into the different types of opening sentences on Tinder, and which may be most effective.
